Stripped Of Your Ordinary Surroundings

“Stripped of your ordinary surroundings, your friends, your daily routines, your refrigerator full of food, your closet full of clothes – with all this taken away, you are forced into direct experience. Such direct experience inevitably makes you aware of who it is that is having the experience. That’s not always comfortable, but it is always invigorating.” -Michael Crichton
I love the quote above – it describes perfectly the way daily life works out for a traveller.

This is one of the main reasons I love to travel – it shows me my true colours.

I am really truly myself when I travel, because it is just too hard to be anyone else. You are surrounded by strangers who do not know who you are.

You can be anyone you wish and you finally wish to see your true self.

It is also hard to be someone else, when you have no real identity. Without a job, or a home, or friends or family around, or anything that reminds you of your identity, you are ready to see yourself as you are without the embellishments.

It is hard to see your true self.

You see yourself with all of your flaws and perfections. You are able to tell that you are not the person you thought you were. You start off seeing all the disappointments that you feel on your own behalf. You are not perfect as you thought you were. Or even close to perfect. You have flaws galore, and somehow after accepting your flaws, you are able to move on to the next stage of accepting your true self as it is. It is somehow like getting into a relationship with yourself – you love yourself no matter what. You are able to see past the imperfections and realize what you truly love about yourself.
It is invigorating to be in such a situation. You do not necessarily need to travel for such an experience. You can have such an experience at home, while meditating or doing a yoga class or spending time with loved ones. But if you wish to make things easy for yourself, travel can show you who you are in a matter of moments. Taking the easy way out, I am going on this trip with Thenix where we both can figure out our true selves and see if we are truly meant for each other as we think we are.
If you haven’t heard of the Big Trip yet, you are in for a treat. Boom and Thenix are travelling to the southern most tip of South America, through the West Cost of US, Mexico and parts of South America and back up the East Coast. We are planning on leaving on or around June 21st. We have made a detailed budget for the trip and we have included it here for those of you who are curious about how much a trip like this would cost. We will travel for a total of 50,000 kms to around 22 countries. If you have any other questions about the trip please see our post on The Big Trip or check out our Archives Page.
