Redefining Freedom

freedom defined

I have been thinking about this question ever since I came back from our travels. I thought to travel was to be free, but I realized within our travels, that we were shackled – we were shackled to our journey, to our plans, to the car, to our route, to our ideas and ideals, and to our goals.

So I decided to ponder on the question – what is freedom defined to me?

What does Freedom with a capital F mean to me? I have used this definition for Freedom in the past. Mike Routen of Route to Freedom says:

Freedom is the ability to live where and how we want to, without the undue influence of societal expectations and without the need to meet external obligations.

What Is Freedom Defined?

But I want to define Freedom further for myself. I want to clarify it more. I want to detail it out for me. Personalize it for my mad uniqueness.
Let’s start with what Freedom isn’t to me. It isn’t about millions of dollars, it isn’t about a a particular career, or title, and it isn’t about a big house. It isn’t about living in a certain place.

Freedom to me is about being free from obligations – free from having to be at a certain place at a certain time.

Sometimes I wake up in the morning and I am excited to go to work. But other days, I am not as excited.

The Freedom To Use My Days As I Want

I want the freedom to be able to say, today I am not going to work. Today, I am going to sleep in, go to yoga, and go to dinner with friends.

I also believe Freedom is the ability to pick up and go at anytime. For me travel is important. Freedom to me would be enough funds to be able to spend a month in Koh Phangan (Thailand) at the Full Moon Party in the winter, spend a couple of weeks in Ibiza in the summer, and ten days at Burning Man. It is the ability both through money and time to be able to say ‘Yes, I am going to join you for Burning Man’. Or whatever else it might be.

Freedom defined is also about thoughts. I might live in the freest country there is, Canada, but in my mind, I am completely shackled. I have thoughts that pull me down, that berate me, that make me feel inadequate or unequal to others.

As you can see, I am still defining freedom for myself. I will keep on working on it. I would love to hear your opinions on it.
